Field Conference Registration:

Pre-conference Field Trips:

These trips are not covered by scholarships.

There is a possibility of a Federal Government shutdown starting September 30th, which may affect the pre-meeting field trips in National Parks. Should that happen, registration fees for those trips will be refunded.

Field trip 1 — Crest of Guadalupe Peak, October 3

Guadalupe Peak, at 2,667 m (8751 ft), is the highest point in the state of Texas. This is a strenuous hike that involves an elevation gain of approximately 1000 m. Participants are advised to wear sensible shoes and pack plenty of water. The complete round trip will take approximately eight hours. To ensure a 7:00 a.m. start Tuesday morning, we suggest that hikers camp out Monday night at the Pine Springs campground near the Guadalupe Mountains National Park Headquarters. A group campsite has been reserved for Monday and Tuesday. Camping and park entrance fees are included with the registration, but bring your own food and water. Lewis Land will lead this trip.

There is limited space for this trip (18 participants). If our limits are reached, you will be contacted and placed on a waiting list in the order requests are received.

Please reserve these spots for the pre-meeting Field trip 1 ($50.00 each; bring a lunch).

Field trip 2 — Cornudas Mountains, October 3    CANCELLED

We will meet near the Border Patrol Station east of El Paso at the intersection of US 54 and NM 506 at 8 a.m on Tuesday, Oct. 3, and caravan to the Cornudas Mountains to examine intrusions and REE deposits. Participants should stay on their own in Alamogordo on Monday evening and can then travel on to Carlsbad afterwards and arrive late in Carlsbad Tuesday evening. Ginger McLemore and Evan Owen will lead this trip.

There is limited space for this trip (20 participants). If our limits are reached, you will be contacted and placed on a waiting list in the order requests are received.

Please reserve these spots for the pre-meeting Field trip 2 ($50.00 each; bring a lunch).

Field trip 3 — Walnut Canyon and Carslbad Cavern, October 4

Carlsbad Cavern is probably the most famous cave in the western United States. The half-day trip (from 10 a.m–3:30 p.m) will begin with a drive up Walnut Canyon. The cave tour begins at the natural entrance and will include a hike down to the Big Room, which involves a 230 m (755 foot) descent on paved trails with artificial lighting, and an elevator for transport back to the surface. Attendees that prefer a less strenous descent can take the elevator down and meet the group in the Big Room. Trip leaders are George Veni and two park service interpretive rangers.

There is limited space for this trip (36 participants). If our limits are reached, you will be contacted and placed on a waiting list in the order requests are received.

Please reserve these spots for the pre-meeting Field trip 3 ($50.00 each; bring a lunch).
