A Brief History of Geological Studies in New Mexico With Biographical Profiles of Notable New Mexico Geologists
Edited by: Barry S. Kues, Claudia J. Lewis, and Virgil W. Lueth
The New Mexico Geological Society promotes interest in geology and associated sciences, fosters scientific research and publications, encourages cooperation among its members, and stimulates interest in New Mexico geology. These goals are met through annual fall field conferences held in different locations in New Mexico or adjoining states and annual spring meetings, generally held in Socorro, New Mexico, where oral presentations on different aspects of New Mexico geology are given.
Through sales of publications and contributions, the Society supports geologic studies in New Mexico. Several grants-in-aid and scholarships are presented annually to graduates and undergraduates studying at New Mexico colleges and universities. To promote the study of earth sciences at a younger age, savings bonds are given for winning earth and space-science projects at the New Mexico State Science Fair.

The original idea of founding the New Mexico Geological Society was conceived in early 1947 by Vincent C. Kelley, at the time a Professor of Geology at the University of New Mexico, and Caswell Silver and Gordon H. Wood, Jr., both UNM geology alumni. On April 12, 1947, 89 geologists met at UNM and organized the Geological Society of New Mexico. The present Constitution and By-Laws were adopted in 1967 and the name was changed to the New Mexico Geological Society that same year. Along with this name change the State Corporation Commission granted the Society nonprofit corporate status. The New Mexico Geological Society is affiliated with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG).
