Non-competitive Scholarships & Awards

LUCILLE H. PIPKIN SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP: 

Awarded annually to a deserving geoscience major who will be a senior the following academic year. Selection is made by the geoscience scholarship committees at ENMU, NMHU, NMIMT, NMSU, NTU, and UNM. The department must anticipate that, in addition to overall merit, the student will receive a geoscience degree by the end of the school year following that in which the award is made.

  • Focus: Support for undergraduate education
  • Awarded: Annually at the Spring Meeting
  • To: Undergraduate geoscience students who will be Seniors the following year.
  • Selection: Scholarship committee at the appropriate school
  • Amount: $600 each

LUCILLE H. PIPKIN BOOK SCHOLARSHIPS:

Awarded in the spring to undergraduate geoscience students to help defray the costs of textbooks. Up to three scholarships available to each New Mexico school offering a geoscience course. Selection is made by faculty at the appropriate institution.

  • Focus: Support of undergraduate education by defraying costs of text books.
  • Awarded: Annually at the Spring Meeting
  • To: Eligible undergraduate students
  • Selection: Scholarship committee at the appropriate school. 
  • Amount: $175 maximum per award

OUTSTANDING SENIOR AWARD:

Award of $200 to the outstanding graduating senior in geosciences at WNMU.

Focus: Recognize and reward outstanding graduating seniors

  • Awarded: Annually at the Spring Meeting
  • To: Senior geoscience student
  • Selection: Geoscience departments at WNMU
  • Amount: $200

ROBERT WELLNITZ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP:

Awarded annually at the Fall Field Conference.  Recipient must be a graduate student at UNM, NMIMT, or NMSU, and whose thesis/dissertation is field oriented and is in New Mexico.   The recipient must attend the Fall Field Conference Banquet in order to receive this award.   The award is rotated among the Geoscience Departments at UNM, NMIMT, and NMSU.  Selection is made by faculty at the institution of the recipient.

  • Focus: Excellence in field-oriented graduate work in New Mexico
  • Awarded: Annually during the Fall Field Conference banquet
  • To: Graduate (M.S. or PhD.) geoscience student
  • Selection: Scholarship committee at the appropriate university 
  • Amount: $1500 award
  • Rotation:
    • NMIMT: 2025, 2028, 2031
    • NMSU: 2023, 2026, 2029
    • UNM: 2024, 2027, 2030

BEVERLY WELLNITZ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP:

Awarded annually at the Fall Field Conference.  Recipient must be a graduate student at UNM, NMIMT, or NMSU, and whose thesis/dissertation is field oriented and is in New Mexico.   The recipient must attend the Fall Field Conference Banquet in order to receive this award.   The award is rotated among the Geoscience Departments at UNM, NMIMT, and NMSU.  Selection is made by faculty at the institution of the recipient.

  • Focus: Excellence in academic graduate work in New Mexico
  • Awarded: Annually during the Fall Field Conference banquet
  • To: Graduate (M.S. or PhD.) geoscience student
  • Selection: Scholarship committee at the appropriate university 
  • Amount: $750 award (for each of two recipients)
  • Rotation:              
    • NMIMT 2023, 2024, 2026, 2027, 2029
    • NMSU  2024, 2025, 2027, 2028, 2029
    • UNM   2023, 2025, 2026, 2028, 2029

FALL FIELD CONFERENCE SCHOLARSHIPS:

We are able to support student attendance to the conference via these three scholarships:

NMGS Fall Field Conference Scholarships:

Variable amount.  Awarded annually prior to the NMGS Fall Field Conference to defray the cost for students to attend the conference.  Graduate and undergraduate students at each New Mexico university offering earth science related curricula and degrees are eligible. Selection is by the scholarship committee at the respective schools.  The number of Fall Field Scholarships available for each school will be determined by the Executive Committee.

  • Focus: Support for student attendance at the NMGS Fall Field Conference
  • Awarded: Annually prior to the Fall Field Conference
  • To: Undergraduates at each of the schools offering geoscience curricula, and graduate geoscience students at the schools offering graduate geoscience degrees.
  • Selection: Scholarship committee at the appropriate university
  • Amount: Fall Field Conference registration fee waived, plus a stipend (contingent upon available funds) to help with lodging or other expenses.

CEARLEY FALL FIELD CONFERENCE SCHOLARSHIPS:

Variable amount. Awarded annually prior to the NMGS Fall Field Conference to defray the cost of students to attend the conference. Graduate and undergraduate students at each New Mexico university offering earth science related curricula and degrees are eligible. Selection by the scholarship committee at the respective schools. This scholarship was established by NMGS Member Thomas A. Solak in honor of Barbara Sue McBride (1956-2000), former VP of Exxon Exploration Company.
