Pliocene (Blancan) vertebrates from the Palomas Formation, south-central New Mexico

Abstract:
Fossil vertebrates collected from the Palomas Formation near Cuchillo Negro Creek in south-central New Mexico are: Geochelone (Hesperotestudo) aff. turgida, Carnivora, Borophagus diversidens, Equidae, Equus simplicidens, Camelidae, Hemiauchenia sp., and Stegomastodon rexroadensis. These vertebrates constitute the Chuchillo Negro Creek local fauna of medial Blancan (Pliocene, about 3 Ma) age. They indicate a relatively frost-free climate and the presence of an open grassland habitat in the Chuchillo Negro Creek area during part of the Pliocene.
