Summary:

The purpose of the first day field trip is to reconstruct the geologic, structural, geomorphic, and paleoclimatic history of north-central New Mexico as expressed in the rocks and landscapes of the Hagan basin. We wish to focus on several contemporary controversies that should generate stimulating discussions. These controversies include the role the basement structure has played in shaping later tectonic events ; the enigmatic ancestral Rocky Mountain orogeny; a tale of two Laramides; footwall uplifts and the Rio Grande rift; regional significance of the Tuerto gravel and Ortiz pediment; and contemporary hydro-environmental issues.
