Best Guidebook Award for our: Geology of the Route 66 Region

The Geoscience Information Society (GSIS) presented the 2015 Best Guidebook Award to the New Mexico Geological Society for our Guidebook, The Geology of the Route 66 Region, from the 64th Fall Field Conference in 2013!

Donald E Owen 1936-2023

Don passed away in Beaumont, Texas on December 30, 2023. He was born in Galveston on November 27, 1936, where he first became acquainted with hurricanes and coastal geologic processes, which provided early inspiration for his interest in geoscience. After graduating at the top of his class at Lamar University in Beaumont, Don earned his MS and PhD degrees at Kansas University. A self-described “fanatical geologist,” his passion for the science was reflected in his research, teaching, and consulting accomplishments.

Each year, the New Mexico Geological Society recognizes an individual who, over the years, has made extraordinary contributions to the Society and presents the person with a lifetime honorary membership. James Cearley, the NMGS Foundation Outreach Officer, is the awardee in 2023.

NMGS 2022 Scholarship Recipients Announced

The New Mexico Geological Society (NMGS) supports geoscience students in New Mexico and their research in several ways, including memberships, scholarships, awards, and subsidies that typically exceed $50,000 per year. Funds for these awards are administered by the NMGS Foundation with an endowment established from generous contributions by several benefactors and from our membership.

NMGS has awarded $40,525 to students in calendar year 2022: $3,675 for student memberships and registrations for the 2022 Spring Meeting and $36,850 for 2022 Grants-in-Aid, Research Awards, Graduate Mentorships, and Undergraduate Awards.

2020 Wellnitz Memorial Scholarships Announced
October 20, 2020

The New Mexico Geological Society annually awards the Wellnitz Memorial Scholarships at the Fall Field Conference. Recipients must be graduate students at UNM, NMT, or NMSU, whose thesis/dissertation is field-oriented and in New Mexico. With the postponement of the 2020 Fall Field Conference, the scholarships were awarded at the virtual 2020 Annual Meeting on October 2, 2020.

  • Lucille H. Pipkin Senior Scholarships are awarded to geoscience majors who will be a Senior the following academic year at each of ENMU, NMHU, NMIMT, NMSU, and UNM.
  • Lucille H. Pipkin Book Scholarships are awarded to outstanding undergraduate geoscience students at NM schools.
  • The Outstanding Senior Award goes to the outstanding graduating senior in geosciences at WNMU.

2019 NMGS FFC Scholarship Recipients
Clayton, NM
October 15, 2019

NMGS awarded 29 scholarships between 6 schools to attend the 2019 Fall Field Conference. Graduate and undergraduate students at each New Mexico university offering earth science related degrees are eligible and the selection is by the scholarship committee at the respective schools. Student scholarships are funded through donations made to the NMGS Foundation and NMGS.
